Group Buy – Aglianico “alli-yawn-nico”
Never heard of it? Aglianico was the premier wine of the Roman Empire. An Italian varietal originating in Greece and cultivated early on by the Phoenicians, it is largely grown in Southern Italy primarily in Basilicata and Campania. It grows very well in warm / dry climates. The wine is big and full bodied with solid tannin structure and good acidity. As such, it is very age worthy. Aglianico is a rich, dark garnet colored wine that has a complex flavor profile of white peppercorn, black cherry, smoked meat, cocoa and spiced plum. Alongside Sangiovese and Nebbiolo, it is one of the top Italian varietals and may actually make some of the best wines you’ve probably never had. J.D. Phelps is organizing a group buy for Aglianico for the 2017 Harvest. If you are interested in trying your hand at making a world class red from this amazing fruit, please contact him.
